Look at the size of these pieces of bark I found in a hanging nestbox. They are lightweight, but about the same size as the bird that brought them in. It made me wonder whether these nuthatchers are getting help from the coconut-carrying swallows in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
This is the third year in a row that White-breasted Nuthatches have used this large, two-hole hanging box made by Linda Violett. The area has plenty of HOSP but the nuthatches successfully fledged young from the box in 2008 and 2009. See photos of their nests which are a marvel of construction.
You cannot begin to preserve any species of animal unless you preserve the habitat in which it dwells. Disturb or destroy that habitat and you will exterminate the species as surely as if you had shot it. So conservation means that you have to preserve forest and grassland, river and lake, even the sea itself. This is vital not only for the preservation of animal life generally, but for the future existence of man himself—a point that seems to escape many people.
