Hughes Sparrow Resistant(?) Slot Box

Material list:

  • Roof – 1 x 8 x 8 1/2; Sides (2) – 1 x 6 x 11;
  • Back, front, floor and ceiling – 1 x 4 x 36. Cup from 2 x 4.
  • Pivot holes are pre-drilled for 5D galvanized hinge nails 1″ from bottom of front (in both sides and front.)
  • An 8D galvanized box nail is used for latch, pre-drill 1/8″ hole in front and one side about 1″ below top of front, either left or right side.
  • Cup is cut to size from 2 x 4. Drill hole 2 1/8 diameter, 1 inch deep, route to 3 inch with a 1/2″ cove bit. 3/16″ mounting holes are pre-drilled 1 1/2″ apart into the back 2″ and 10″ from the bottom (shown in top diagram of Back.) Use 11 1/2″, 14 ga. electric fence wire bent over a 2 x 4 into the shape shown above to tie the box to the post.

Often the 1 x 6 (for the sides) is undersized and the ceiling should be trimmed to compensate if this is the case so that the ceiling is even with the sides.

We recommend mounting on 6 ft “T” post and a 20″ piece of PVC pipe on post under the box. Spray with silicone when eggs and babies are present.
