David Gwin of Texas has modified the traditional Peterson box design for experimental use on his trail.
This box has a 5″x5″ floor, and the drop from the bottom of the hole to the floor is about 8″, which makes it resistant to avian and mammalian predation. The larger floor will accommodate birds that need more space, such as flycatchers, woodpeckers, and Western Bluebirds.
Hanging a box discourages predation by raccoons, feral cats, and human vandals.
Basically 2″ has been added to each of exterior dimensions. All other cuts are as per original Peterson design. Use 2x6s instead of 2x4s.
Gwin developed and constructed a jig for the hanger. He said it took a lot of trial and error to get it right. It is tricky to make the bend without kinking the pipe.
