3 nest attempts in 2 boxes. 2 successful (4 nestlings lost from 1 nest). Total of 14 eggs, 12 hatched, 8 fledged. First egg 4/19.
3 F HOWR attempts in 3 boxes. 1 F HOSP attempt, 4 HOWR dummy nests at end of season
4/16: Serious wasp problem, worst by woods. Ivory soaped boxes. One bluebird pair seen, numerous TRES.
4/22: HOSP going in and out of L. Installed sparrow spooker. Painted underside of Peterson boxes with latex, as all had wasps. Reapplied paraffin to boxes that still had wasp activity. Counted 15 TRES flying in upper area.
4/23: Sparrow spooker apparently effective, second egg laid. Saw starling fly from box H while parents perched on nearby metal vent.
5/14: 100% occupancy! 11 boxes with TRES in them, 2 with a few wasps. Some nests had no feathers. No eggs yet.
Bluebird conservation offers an unusual opportunity for people who are truly concerned about our wildlife heritage to accomplish something by means of direct action.
