04/10/05: Both nests finished, no eggs. Tree Swallows claiming boxes (Peterson in front of house, Peterson by Johns, one behind office)
04/12: Complete loosely constructed pine needle nest to R of treehouse. Grass missing from Peterson box in back.
4/13: Still no eggs. DId see chickadee trying to get into starling trap box, and white feather in back wooden box.
4/14: bluebird pair now building in Peterson in front of house? TRES seen going in that box. Abandoned other nest? Nest by stream, and by treehouse empty (although looks more complete. Partial nest (1" no bottom) in 17L - messy grass
4/15: white feather in bluebird love. 2" in 17L. Saw male HOSP by house to right of treehouse
4/18: noticed birds don't seem to be using boxes with timothy hay. Back box with sawdust also no nest building by TRES. Removed. No eggs yet (didn't check Hosmer today). Appears bluebirds in back are same ones in other two boxes.
4/19: TRES and HOSP at Rogers box. Slot box looks like it has a HOSP nest. Have concluded sawdust, timothy hay and an existing nest deter TRES from selecting box, timothy hay may deter bluebirds.
4/21: chickadee putting moss in box in back. Wasps in two boxes in front - soaped.
4/22: TRES checking out peterson and gilwood in front. 1 egg in box to L of treehouse. HOSP nests in both Tivnan boxes, HOSP on Demurs property. No egg in pine nest. TRES swooping Peterson in back box but no nestbuilding. Leaves - titmouse? in box in isolate. Nothing at Chapuis. Applied paraffin.
4/26: Chickadee nest complete with fur, no eggs, but TRES perching on box. Installed hole reducer, moved box that was by the RV over near the chickadee box. Saw TRES perching on it. One pair of HOSP seen by treehouse. Trapped one with Van Ert in box (male) and put in DRST (with one pair HOSP in birdcage.) Three other HOSP trapped in DRST - possibly pair seen on Rogers barn roof and near lower box.
5/1: trapped 1 male by John's. 12 trapped so far this year.
5/5: 2 F, 1 M HOSP out of nowhere, female going in 1z. Makes 15 HOSP trapped this year.
5/8: Dead TRES face down in nest in front of Tivnan's. Male bluebird on top of slot box, looking in - possibly HOWR inside. NO TRES in sight - cold and nasty, in 50's.
5/9: Trapped F HOSP in DRST. HOSP escaped when removing chipmunk. Milkweed husks in TRES nest by Hosmers.
5/10: T HOWR Chace. Titmouse in isolate - hissed and pecked 3x.
5/11: pair of HOSP on fence by Lynns, complete nest, trapped male. 16 total in 2005.
5/13: added HOWR eyebrow guard - took chickadee 3 visits, about 8 minutes to accept. Trapped F M in Johns, M killed other decoys.
5/14: caught male HOSP in our yard. 19 total.
5/23: cold rainy weather begins. Put mealworm feeder by treehouse - discovered in minutes by M, probably pair from last year.
5/26: TRES egg pecked by Tivnans, made a mess in the nest. Removed pecked egg and goo and replaced other 2 eggs.
5/27: Trapped F HOSP in box on my fence. Takeover from HOWR
5/28: Trapped M HOSP in box on fence, female in DRST. 22 total this season. Cleaned out Gilbertson, it was filthy and wet with blow flies. T MF HOWR reld
6/9: Jenn trapped 1 F in DRST, today 1 M HOSP in DRST. 24 this season.
6/10: one M at our house in DRST. 25. Male blue singing on wire. NO second nests yet....
7/28: have the HOWR finally given up? Nope - in back box by the fence. Also saw a male HOSP with feather under feeder.
Contracted Lyme disease, recordkeeping went out the window.
